Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
たんじょうびはいつですか。 (Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka.)
3がつ4かです。 (San-gatsu yokka desu.)
Once more with the English translation.
たんじょうびはいつですか。 (Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka.)
“When is your birthday?”
3がつ4かです。 (San-gatsu yokka desu.)
“It's on March 4th.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?"
The pattern is:
[event] は いつ ですか。 ([event] wa itsu desu ka.)
This Japanese sentence translates as "[event] when is?" But it means “When is [event]?”.
For example:
たんじょうびはいつですか。, たんじょうびはいつですか。 (Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka., Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka.)
Now, how do you answer this question?
3がつ4かです。 (San-gatsu yokka desu.)
Listen to it again:
3がつ4かです。, 3がつ4かです。 (San-gatsu yokka desu., San-gatsu yokka desu.)
This Japanese sentence literally translates as "March 4th it is." But it means "It's on March 4th.".
